pingo could transform image data to grayscale. it could do this with or without additionnal loss over the conversion

convert image data to gray levels without additionnal loss
pingo -grayscale -sN target
convert image data to gray levels with additionnal loss (auto)
pingo -auto -grayscale -sN target
